You’ve probably heard or read about facial fillers and how they’re mighty effective in helping men and women deal with their facial aging woes — from sunken cheeks to nasolabial folds to laugh lines. Yet, with too many types of fillers out there, it’s not uncommon for first-time visitors here at our practice to mistake one filler for the other. If you’ve been contemplating about having facial fillers for a while now, it pays to understand what each filler can specifically do for you. We have outlined some general information of the most popular dermal fillers below.
Hyaluronic Acid Fillers (Restylane, Juvederm, Perlane and Prevelle)
These fillers are ideal for adding volume to mild to moderate creases or folds around the nose and mouth areas. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance in the body but often diminishes as one ages. Once any of these fillers are injected, it acts as an inflated cushion to facial parts that have lost elasticity or volume. In addition, hyaluronic acid encourages water to the surface of the skin, resulting to plump and supple skin. Newer versions of hyaluronic acid fillers are mixed with anesthetics to help reduce pain.
Collagen-based fillers such as Artefill are widely used to improve the appearance of nasolabial folds, lips and acne scars. It is not recommended for areas that have thinner skin such as those around the eye area (crow’s feet).
Sculptra is the most popular amongst synthetic fillers due to its high biocompatibility. It has been proven effective to improve the appearance of deep nasolabial folds, marionette lines (lines around the mouth), and chin wrinkles.
Minimal to Non-Existent Downtime
Apart from its cost, minimal to non-existent downtime is one of the most common reasons of patients choosing dermal fillers over surgical procedures such as a face lift, brow lift, and an eyelid lift. In addition, results are immediately noticeable.
